Mirissa Weligama & Matara a nice combination for holiday makers

If you are traveling from Galle towards Matara in Hambantota road, then you will find Weligama, Mirissa, Polhena and Matara unbelievably beautiful beaches on your way.  Which are presented most spectacular and glamorous view at any time of the day. Not just beaches, you can visit more attractions around the area. Historical places, small islands that you can visit, shopping, eating, water sports etc.

If I list places you could visit, first will be the Kushtarajagala. It is on the Colombo road. A monument aged back to 6,7 centuries AD. Majestic sculpture of Avaloketishvara was carved in to a rock incredibly. Devinuwara, also known as Dondra is the most southern tip of Sri Lanka. Devinuwara  temple is magnificent temple of Vishnu. It is well known and only Vishnu temple in the area. Veherahena Buddhist temple also famous and unique, because of its very large statue of Lord Buddha and a tunnel temple. Constructions were started with the blessings of Hon Anagarika Dharmapala, A Buddhist leader and statue was finished with the donations from Japan.

Matara fort is another famous attraction among both local and foreign visitors.  The Fort was first built by Protugease in 1560 but then by Dutch after they capture Galle.  Nowadays it has so many hotels, guest houses, restaurants and entertainment facilities that people can enjoy.  Star Fort can be seen in a city of Matara. It was built at 1940 and got its name because of its shape. Historically it was used in wars to protect and secure the main fort in Matara.

Mirissa Doping The Mirissa beach is well known amongst the tourists as it has been a famous destination in Matara area from many years now.  Clear water, normal waves, golden sand all makes this beach very attractive for tourists from all over the world. It also popular for available sports facilities. As water is not so deep it is safe for surfing and swimming even for children. You can even walk in the shallow water for some distance. Another great thing to do in Mirissa is Whale watching. Boat rides are available for the purpose and you could see whales, turtles and dolphins.

Mathara Taprobane island

Weli-gama means sandy village in Sinhala. A magnificent beach famous for a nice fishing town and beach resorts. You will see dozens of colorful traditional boats pulling in the morning after their fishing expeditions at night. The most recognizable feature of Weligama is a Taprobane island. Only 200 meters off the shore, a rocky island has a white villa with red tiled roof.  It was built by exiled French Count De Mauny  in 1930 and made him home for 30 years. Today it is a villa with five suites that attracts holiday makers.

Basically Galle to Matara beach is safe and very attractive among people. Coconut farms along beaches, shallow and safe water, cultural, historical, architectural attractions to visit, Whale watching boat riding, scuba diving, swimming and surfing for thrill seekers and many more things make the area highlight on the Sri Lankan map
