Hikkaduwa is a well known seaside tourist destination in southwestern Sri Lanka. Only 119 kms away from nations capital Colombo and its only three hours drive from the Colombo airport. The area is famous for its sandy beaches with shallow water, coral sanctuary, surfing, scuba diving and the list continues. The reef along with the beach at Hikkaduwa is home for most beautiful marine life and a coral sanctuary. On the other hand the reef also makes swimming safer in the beach by working as a protective wall.
The town is full of best beachfront tourist resorts and Hotels. Many restaurants in the area serve food in different cuisine with international standards. The first attraction is the beach itself. The beach is best place for snorkeling and scuba diving. That may be the best way to protect coral and the same time get an amazing experience. When the sea is calm you can swim and dive around reef and could see large verity of colorful fish. Or may be lucky enough to swim with a turtle. Or spot a squid. Coral reef was almost damaged by the 2004 tsunami. And now it is growing back to its glorious past.
The beach is ideal place to relaxation. Wide sandy beach with lot of exposure to sun makes a great place to get a tan. Shallow and clear water makes the sea safe and easy place to enjoy even if you are not a good swimmer. If you are keen for surfing there is a place for you. Narigama beach, only 3 kms south to Hikkaduwa town is the best place for surfing. There are quite a few places to rent necessary gear at reasonable prices. Wind surfing and kite surfing options also available.
If you have some time to spare, it will not waste to visit few places around Hikkaduwa. Seenigama Muhudu devalaya (Sea temple) is a unique place to visit. The main temple is in the sea. You have to go by a boat to reach there. Place was constantly visited by locals as well as foreigners. Naga viharaya temple is a Buddhist monastery in a walkable distance at Hikkaduwa. A calm and quiet environment of the temple brings you to a relaxation state. If you want to get a time out from a busy and noisy environment or get a touch of local culture this is the place to go.
Hikkaduwa harbor is another place to visit. Local fishing boats are landing in the morning and start to sell their catch. You can buy some fresh fish if you wish to. There are few turtle hatcheries too. Whale watching journeys also available at many places.
Tsunami museum at Paraliya also a place to visit. Where you can find out pictures and information about the great devastation of 2004 tsunami. The train that struck by tsunami and killed many of its passengers also exhibit at the site.
